The Alpha Gamma Rho Home Office team gave back this holiday season, helping fight hunger by volunteering for Harvesters Community Food Network.
On December 15, 2023, staff members sorted donations, ranging from canned food and cake mix to toys and toiletries at Harvesters' main facility in Kansas City, Missouri. Led by CEO Rex Martin, Alpha Gamma Rho sorted more than 2,000 lbs. of donations.
The donations are sent to the warehouse, where volunteers sort and repackage the food for online ordering by more than 370 partner agencies.
This was the fourth year in a row the Home Office volunteered sorting donations for Harvesters during December, a time Harvesters often experiences an increase in requests but a decrease in volunteers. Without Harvesters, much of this food would go to waste. The products may be approaching the end of their shelf life, or the items may not be uniform in size, considered too large, small or odd-shaped to be placed on grocery store shelves.
About Harvesters
Harvesters Community Food Network is a food bank that serves a 26-county region across northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri. A food bank is a place that collects, packages, stores, and distributes food to a network of partner agencies, including food pantries, community kitchens, and shelters.
The partner agencies provide groceries or meals to families, children and seniors in need. With the help of donations and volunteers, Harvesters feeds 141,500 people every month. In 2023, 56.7 million meals were made possible because of Harvesters.
