Brother Evan Pointer of Alpha Lambda at New Mexico State University began showing lambs at 10 years old. He continued to show lambs until he graduated high school, and it was during that time he discovered he wanted to raise his own lambs.
Evan graduated from New Mexico State in 2020 and began his career as Crew Chief for a company called AMD Engineering, LLC in Lubbock, Texas, and later moved to the role of Survey Project Manager for the company John West Surveying Company in Hobbs, New Mexico. From graduation until the beginning of 2024, Evan saved up money to buy his own show sheep.
“I purchased some ewes to breed and some bucks that a breeder had, and we have our first crop this year,” Brother Pointer said.
He said saving money was what really got him started, but he also stressed the importance of networking and making good business decisions when it came to purchasing things to get his business started. He said Alpha Gamma Rho helped prepare him for opening his business and all the things he would have to consider going forward.
“AGR has helped me just get a better perspective on how to manage things and relationships with people,” Brother Pointer said.
Evan said he currently lives with his brother who helps out with the sheep, but overall, he runs a one-man operation.
He noted that his main goal with the lambs is to sell them to 4-H and FFA youth members so that they can raise and show their own sheep, just like he did growing up. Brother Pointer also said he does plan to sell to respective breeders as well.
Brother Pointer said there are a few ways to sell the lambs. He plans on mostly selling them through Private Treaty Sales, which is potential buyers coming out to see the sheep and Evan prices the sheep if they want to buy it. He also said he was invited to a few sales in New Mexico to sell the sheep and plans on attending those as well.
