Tau Chapter at Michigan State University held its fourth annual Golf Outing to gather funds to renovate the deck of the chapter house and fix anything that needs it.
Brother Broxten Davis is the VNR-Finance for Tau Chapter. He said last year he helped his roommate plan the event. It was during this time he realized how important the event was for the chapter to not only raise funds, but also connect with his fellow AGRs.
“The deck is actually a large part of the house that was donated a long time ago, so it really needs some revamping,” Brother Davis said. “It will be a big upgrade for us.”
The Golf Outing is an all-day event with a full day of golfing, lunch, a 50/50 raffle and dinner at the chapter house. The raffle earned a total of $940 that was split between the chapter and the winner of the raffle. Brother Davis said the event also had a variety of golf-related awards such as longest drive and closest to the pin. He also noted that the overall winner of the outing received a cash prize.
Brother Davis said the event was open to anyone who wanted to come, but most of the attendees were alumni. Anyone who paid to golf also got lunch and dinner. The event brought in 120 participants and the chapter raised roughly $10,000 for their chapter house renovations.
“It was an all-time high,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier with how it ended up going.”
Brother Davis said he felt like the chapter hit all of the goals they had for the event. He said the chapter looked forward to renovations and how it might improve recruitment efforts, as well as overall happiness among current members.
Brother Davis also said the other great part of the Golf Outing was the brothers got to meet and get to know their alumni better. He said many brothers got to make new connections while some got to reunite with old friends.
“It’s really cool to see the atmosphere,” he said when he reflected on watching 20-plus-year alumni reunite with their brothers and mingle with the younger AGRs of Tau Chapter.
Brother Davis said next year they hope to grow the event and play more holes.
